Tip 3: Play to a higher or lower target

#1 by UrsusArctos , Sun Aug 21, 2011 12:10 pm

When you play your ball to a target that is not on the same level as then the position of your ball the following rule can be applied (real and online):

Up to Target: Shotlength = distance to target + elevation of target.
Down toTarget: Shotlength = distance to target - 2/3rd elevation of target.

A very similar rule can be used for putting.

Up to the hole: putlength = distance to the hole + 10 * elevation of it.
Down to the hole: putlength = distance to the hole - 5 * elevation of it.

Try it out.

I made some good experience by using this simple formula:

UPHILL shots: just add (elevation/2) to shot-percentage....
DOWNHILL shots: substract half of the elevation from your shotstrength...

e.g.: pin can be reached with 80% shotpower, but it's 15m above you....
so you simply add 8% to your shot and you're fine.

but always take care for the lie of your ball... uphill/downhill lay affects your shotlength, too !

@chris:
try the above and give me some feedback, if this works for you... i'll try your way, too!

You are right, Pitch.
The only disadvantage of adding/reducing %tage is that its hard to use it in Real-Golf.

i agree for real-golf, chris...

but for golfstar, your method is too complicated due to the fact that the shot power is given in %, not in meters... :-)
